It’s not that we’re a body and then we get a spirit. We don’t have a soul; we are the soul. We are spiritual beings. But we’re accommodated by a material body because of our attraction to material nature. We’re sort of on a joy ride that goes wrong, being ensconced in the material world.
We’re like a fish out of water, because I’m a spiritual being, but when I leave the spiritual vibration, and I get into a material environment, I can get absorbed in it. But it really doesn’t bring me happiness. The only real happiness in the material world is ultimately a temporary relief from stress, or distress, whereas real spiritual happiness is continuous and not dependent on getting something. That’s just who we are.
According to the wisdom literature, when we get involved in a spiritual practice we notice our own nature and we’re able to feel happy in any circumstance. We become cognizant. Part of this cognisance is the knowledge that, “I’m not my body,” as described in the Bhagavad Gita.
